Obviously, I am an enormous fan of Miriam Haskell and, consequently, I have just completed what will be the first of many more pieces to come. Enjoy this brooch. It is constructed from pieces of three earrings. The beautiful pink flower in the center of the brooch is a single porcelain earring from Denton’s of England and the two larger pearls are drops from a pair of vintage pearl earrings.

The Associated PressTAOS, N.M.  — Great Barrington, Mass., and Taos, N.M., top a list of “20 Best Small Towns in America” in the May issue of Smithsonian Magazine.

Great Barrington, long a favorite summer and fall getaway destination for vacationers, has a population of just 6,800 but boasts the sophistication of a larger city, with great food, arts, and plenty of hipsters. It’s also surrounded by natural beauty, with lakes, woods and the nearby Berkshire Mountains.

The magazine says the charm of Taos centers around tourists and other outdoor enthusiasts packing the plaza of the old adobe town, along with its many galleries and museums steeped in a deep Hispanic and Native American past. The small mountain hamlet is located in northern New Mexico.

The list was developed by the geographic information systems company Esri, which searched towns with populations less than 25,000 for high concentration of museums, historical sites and other cultural attractions.

Joining Brunswick on the list are Red Bank, N.J.; Mill Valley, Calif.; Gig Harbor, Wash.; Durango, Colo.; Butler, Pa.; Marfa, Texas; Naples, Fla.; Staunton, Va.; Brattleboro, Vt.; Princeton, N.J.;  Siloam Springs, Ark.; Menomonie, Wis.; Key West, Fla.; Laguna Beach, Calif.; Ashland, Ore.; Beckley City, W.Va., and Oxford, Miss

Einstein once said that imagination was more important than knowledge and he used his knowledge to indulge in “thought experiments” where he happened to discover the most famous equation ever (E = MC2).

I know that Einstein was head and shoulders above me in brain power so his advice is golden with me. I am trying to learn to lighten up and find new ways to be creative and imaginative. Famous equations are definitely not in my thought process but how to make
a new piece of jewelry in the fashion of my vintage jewelry heroine, Miriam Haskell, keeps me fascinated for days.

As a result, The Vintage Scamp has brought the twinkle back into my eye, given me a new adventure at a stage in my life when I wasn’t expecting one but one that continues to yield creative excitement for me each and every day.

Thank you, Mr. Einstein! I remember having that wonderful chat with you during a Girl Scout trip to Princeton oh so many years ago when I was ever so fortunate to find you sitting in your front porch rocker. I had fortunately gotten separated from my troop and happened upon you and your tiny Princeton home. I did not realize at the time how important that occasion was.  Today, I wish I could relive the moment so that I could try
to get it right. You were ever so kind and I will always be grateful.
